Houston Texans safety Jimmie Ward may soon have to part ways with the team. On Monday, March 2, it was announced by several media outlets that coach DeMeco Ryans‘ Texans team plans on relieving Ward of his role as part of their 2026 offseason moves.
In a report by NFL reporter Aaron Wilson, it was revealed that the reason why Ward is being released by the Houston-based franchise is due to the veteran being on the Physically Unable to Perform list throughout the 2025 campaign. This came after Ward was also placed on the Commissioner Exempt list for the year, months after he picked up a foot injury late in the 2024 season.
Wilson added that Ward was initially scheduled to receive a base salary of $2.75 million for the entirety of the 2026 season had he been able to suit up for the team. With this, another report by Adam Schefter details that because of Ward’s departure, the Texans will be able to save as much as $750,000 on their salary cap this offseason, allowing Houston more flexibility with its roster and staff moves.
As mentioned, Ward did not play for the entirety of the 2025 season, but his team held an overall record of 12-5, good enough for the second seed in the AFC South and, more importantly, make the NFL postseason. Their run came to a screeching halt when they lost to coach Mike Vrabel’s New England Patriots, who went all the way to Super Bowl LX, in the AFC Divisional Playoffs by 12 points, 28-16.
Jimmie Ward Was Arrested In June Of Last Year Due To Alleged Family Violence
The reason that Jimmie Ward was placed on the Commissioner Exempt list heading into the 2025 NFL season is that he was arrested in June of last year.
The arrest occurred after a woman called up authorities claiming that Ward had assaulted her multiple times, both sexually and physically, at his home. It has since been determined that there is insufficient evidence to back up the alleged sequence.
