Reporter Shares Update on the Athletic’s Dianna Russini Investigation Months After Mike Vrabel Scandal

The Dianna Russini and Mike Vrabel controversy was among the biggest of the 2026 NFL offseason, after the two were spotted together at an adults-only, luxurious resort in Arizona while married to other people.

While Vrabel didn’t face many consequences after the scandal, except for choosing to miss Day 3 of the 2026 NFL draft to seek counselling, Russini quit her job at “The Athletic” after the organization began an internal investigation into her journalism.

Senior media reporter for Front Office Sports, Michael McCarthy, shared an update on Russini’s investigation in a post uploaded on X on Thursday:

“Update on @TheAthletic’s Dianna Russini investigation. Sources say investigation is still ongoing. And a reminder: The investigation is limited to the former Senior NFL Insider ‘s journalism for The Athletic, not her conduct.” McCarthy wrote.

A couple of weeks ago, The Athletic executive editor Steven Ginsberg’s also gave an update on the investigation:

It’s going to take a few more weeks,” Ginsberg reportedly said. “There’s just a lot to go through, and we obviously want to take our time and be careful doing that. We will update everybody when we get to the end of that. We’ve also said that if we find anything that needs to be corrected, we will correct it along the way.”

Mike Florio Senses Trouble for Mike Vrabel After Bizarre Press Conference Statement

As the Patriots began their OTAs in the last week of May, Mike Vrabel spoke to the media in a press conference.

One reporter asked Vrabel if he expects to miss any more time as the team’s head coach; instead of saying yes or no, Vrabel said, “Anything can happen,” raising eyebrows about what that could actually mean.

Decoding Vrabel’s statement, Mike Florio shared his thoughts on the May 29 episode of “PFT Live” podcast and said:

“The one thing that has yet to happen is that Dianna Russini has yet to tell her story, and we have no idea. There’s no indication. There’s been nothing. No leaks, no scoops. The only thing that made me think it’s going to happen is your guy Stugotz saying he’s friends with her, that he’s talked to her, and that he’s not going to speak for her. It’s her story to tell in her own time. That implies that she will.

“That’s the moment that I said, ‘uh-oh, there’s going to be a chapter of this that is very public and very interesting because she’s going to tell her story at some point.’ That’s the next thing. That’s the only thing left.”

Florio added that Russini coming forward with her side of the story could leave Vrabel having to take another break from the team to try to restore balance between his work and personal life.
