Deion Sanders is set to meet with Cleveland Browns coach Todd Monken to discuss talk about Shedeur Sanders. Deion is not only Shedeur Sanders’ father, but his former coach, first at Jackson State and then at Colorado.
Shedeur Sanders, who played the latter part of the 2025 NFL season as the Browns’ starter, is locked in a quarterback battle with Deshaun Watson this offseason. Watson didn’t feature at all in 2025, as he was recovering from an injury to his Achilles tendon. Shedeur took the starting job from Dillon Gabriel, who had in turn taken it from veteran Joe Flacco.
Deion Sanders is expected to lobby for his son to be the starting quarterback for the Browns in 2026, although he says he will approach this meeting as a former coach and not as a father. Analyst Mike Florio said on Monday that this is the key to making sure that Todd Monken pays attention to what the Colorado coach has to say:
“It looks like Deion (Sanders) wants to try to work his magic on Todd Monken, and explain to Todd Monken why it is in everyone’s best interest for Shedeur (Sanders) to be the quarterback, and if you do x, y, and z, it will work. And if it doesn’t happen, it’s because you failed, not because Shedeur failed,”
“That’s the danger, and that’s why I think Deion needs to take a look in the mirror and ask himself. Am I capable of separating father from coach? Is this something I would say about any of my former players? Or am I being influenced by the fact that this is my son? I couldn’t fix it for him when he slid to Round 5. This is my way to fix it now. I’ll help him get a fair shot at being the Week 1 starting quarterback. He’ll win the competition with Deshaun Watson, and everything will work out.”
How did Shedeur Sanders do as the starter for the Cleveland Browns in the latter half of the 2025 season?
After an injury suffered by Dillon Gabriel against the Baltimore Ravens in mid-November, Shedeur Sanders took over starting duties. He started in seven games and managed to get three victories. The first one came immediately, in his first start, against the also struggling Las Vegas Raiders. The 24-10 victory ended a three-game losing streak, but was followed by four straight defeats.
Shedeur did manage to get two victories in the last weeks of the season, closing the year with wins over the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cincinnati Bengals. In total, he recorded 1400 passing yards, with seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions. His QBR was an incredibly low 18.9. He also recorded 169 rushing yards, with one touchdown.
