Former NFL running back Chris Johnson is reviving the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge that went viral in 2014. The effort comes after Johnson revealed that he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Johnson has made two posts on social media in an attempt to revive the challenge because it serves a greater purpose. In his recent post, Johnson’s daughter took the challenge and nominated three people, including LeBron James.
“Hi, my name is Honey Love Johnson, and today we’re doing the Ice Bucket Challenge for ALS for my dad, CJ2K. And I’m nominating my brothers, CJ and Kaden, and LeBron James,” she said before taking the ice bucket.
The Ice Bucket Challenge became a global social media phenomenon in 2014. Countless celebrities from around the world got involved and helped raise money for research and awareness on ALS.
As per the ALS Therapy Development Institute, the challenge helped raise over $220 million worldwide, including $135 million in the United States. Johnson wants to bring the challenge back because he wants more people to know about the disease and help raise funds for it.
Kicking off the campaign by nominating a superstar like LeBron James will help spread the message quickly. James hasn’t responded to the post yet.
A few days ago, it was announced that James had informed the Lakers that he would not be returning for the 2026-27 season. His busy schedule centered around finding a new team might be one of the reasons James hasn’t responded to the challenge yet.
Hunter Mecum Inspired Chris Johnson to Bring Back the Ice Bucket Challenge
Before his daughter took the challenge and nominated LeBron James, Chris Johnson took inspiration from Hunter Mecum to bring back the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. The 40-year-old took to Instagram to get the community behind him.
“The support you’ve shown me over the last few days has meant more than I can put into words,” he wrote. “Years ago, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge united millions of people around one cause and helped change the fight against this disease. Today, I’m asking you to help me do it again.”
Johnson challenged former NFL stars Marshawn Lynch, LenDale White, and Adam “Pacman” Jones to take the challenge and spread the word about the campaign.
