Mike Vrabel joined the New England Patriots in January 2025. A franchise legend, Vrabel had said that his familiarity with the Patriots and their star quarterback Drake Maye were the reasons why he decided to become their head coach.
In his first season, Vrabel took the Patriots to the Super Bowl, becoming only the eighth head coach to reach the Super Bowl in their first season. Although his team lost to the Seahawks, Vrabel’s first season in New England was impressive.
What should’ve been a great year for him, revolving around team building and the 2026 NFL Draft selections, turned into a nightmare after his pictures with The Athletic NFL reporter Dianna Russini were published by Page Six.
They were seen together at a resort in Sedona, Arizona. The pictures raised questions about their alleged extramarital affair, and they became the biggest topic of discussion in the football world. But that wasn’t the end of it.
“On Thursday, the Post released additional photos of Vrabel and Russini together at a New York City bar in 2020,” CBS News reported.
All the drama and chaos created by the Vrabel and Russini scandal is seemingly taking a toll on the head coach. Vrabel, after initially denying the notion of an affair, has stated that he will seek counseling.
So, what will happen to his head coaching career now? As of now, there’s no indication that Vrabel will step down as the Patriots’ head coach. Even though there’s a lot of pressure on him, he will likely stay in his position.
Many people have argued that Vrabel’s alleged affair with Russini doesn’t violate any personal conduct policy, and he shouldn’t be fired for it. Commissioner Roger Goodell recently told ESPN that it’s a team matter. Interestingly, Russini has resigned from her position at the Athletic.
Mike Vrabel Wants to Give the Best Version of Himself to the Team
During Thursday’s press conference, Vrabel said that his family and football are the two most important things in his life. Even though the current situation is chaotic, Vrabel wants to give the best version of himself to his team and his family.
“What I believe is best for the two most important things in my life – my family and this football team – is for us to take the necessary steps to work together, and to give them what I told them I’d give them, which is the best version of me, and that’s what we’re going to do,” he said.
Vrabel said that he’s working on himself and he’ll continue to do so until he reaches his goal.
