‘Getting $25 Million to Sit on the Bench Is Wild’: Fans React As Ty Simpson Signs Rookie Contract With Rams

Ty Simpson was drafted as the No.13th overall pick by the Los Angeles Rams in the 2026 NFL Draft.

The former Alabama star just had one year of starting experience in his college career, which is why many analysts and fans were shocked when he declared for the NFL draft.

The fans and analysts were left even more shocked when the Rams picked Simpson, as they believed the franchise could’ve picked someone who would help them win the trophy this year. That won’t be the case with Simpson, who will be playing as Matthew Stafford’s backup.

Despite the debate around him, Simpson officially signed his $25.4 million, 4-year rookie contract with the Rams on Saturday.

Reacting to the news, fans shared their thoughts.

”Getting $25 million to sit on the bench is wild.” One fan said.

“We’ll see if we got a good one cuz once a real quarterback retires we going to need a good quarterback so hopefully he can fit those shoes or fit better we’ll see see what he looks like in preseason good luck to you!!!“ Another fan wrote.

“That’s a lot to ask of a rookie who hasn’t played in any major match 25 mil worth.” Another fan said.

“When I go to work and look at this deal for a back up qb my mind explodes in confusion just gotta wonder why someone holding a clipboard and playing with balls on the sidelines is worth 40 million dollars before he even takes a snap.. his agent deserves a raise.” Another fan shared.

“Uh…..in an unproven QB? He better come out of the gates like a bat out of hell.” Another fan wrote.

“Dude just needs to sit back be quiet and soak up everything he can from Stafford.” Another fan wrote.

Matthew Stafford Understands Rams’ Decision to Pick Ty Simpson

Fans noticed Sean McVay’s hesitation on the 2026 NFL Draft day 1 when the Rams were picking Simpson, as they thought the head coach was worried he would upset Matthew Stafford with the decision.

During a press conference on May 29, Stafford said he understands the Rams’ decision to pick Simpson, noting that he is no longer “25 years old.”

“I’m not going to get into what our conversation was. I appreciate him talking with me about those things. We have constant dialogue and a great relationship, so I appreciate that,” Stafford said of his conversations with head coach Sean McVay. “I understand where the team’s coming from.”

Stafford added that he understands the franchise is doing everything it can to be as good a football team as possible now and in the future.
