Mike Tomlin resigned from his position as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers after their wild-card defeat to the Houston Texans. Tomlin ended a 19-year stint in Pittsburgh in which he never recorded a losing season.
Following his resignation and the overwhelming love that Tomlin has received from Steelers fans and players, his wife, Kiya, issued a statement through her company. Kiya stated that she’s proud of Mike’s run in Pittsburgh and was touched by the love he received upon making the announcement.
“I am incredibly proud of what he has accomplished both on and off the field. Over the past days, the testimonies shared by his current and former players- the men who knew him best- have been deeply moving. They validate what I have always known about his mission, one that began long before the titles and headlines, when we first met in college,” she WROTE.
Kiya spoke about how Mike’s purpose from the very beginning was to mentor young, talented players and turn them into not just game winners but also great individuals. During his time with the Steelers, he accomplished that.
Mike Tomlin Left Pittsburgh to Spend More Time with His Family
Tomlin has left Pittsburgh with an overall record of 201-126-2. The former Super Bowl winner has been a coach since 1995, and he felt it was time to step away and spend more time with his family.
According to Steelers owner Art Rooney II, Tomlin hasn’t been able to be fully present in his family’s lives due to his relentless commitment to coaching football.
“Mike indicated that he did not anticipate coaching at least in the near future,” Rooney SAID. “I think he wants to spend time with his family and do some of the kinds of things he hasn’t been able to do for the last many, many years.”
It does look like Tomlin will dedicate more time to his family now because, despite being one of the most successful coaches available on the market, he isn’t in talks with any franchise for another job.
