Mike McCarthy will be in Pittsburgh this upcoming season as the Steelers’ head coach, but will he have his former quarterback Aaron Rodgers under center for the black and gold?
Rodgers, who is 43 years old, signed a one-year deal last season to join the Steelers, largely in part for his trust in former head coach Mike Tomlin’s ability to lead the team to a potential Super Bowl run. When Tomlin left the team this offseason, notifying the team his decision to step down, it decreased Rodgers’ chances of coming back to the Steeles next season.
But the Steelers replaced Tomlin with another Super Bowl-winning coach who was Rodgers’ coach in Green Bay in Mike McCarthy. Many people think that move could possibly reel in Rodgers for another season with the Steelers.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday at his introductory press conference, McCarthy let his feelings known about a potential Rodgers return when asked.
How Did Aaron Rodgers Do Under Center For The Steelers This Past Season?
While he may not be what he once was 5-10 years ago, Aaron Rodgers had a solid campaign this past season in Year 21. He ranked 15th in most passing yards with 3,332, ranked 13th in passing touchdowns with 24, and threw under 10 interceptions (7) while missing a game.
Rodgers had six multi-touchdown pass games including two games throwing for four touchdowns. He did so without having a player record more than 850 yards and having a weaker wide receiver core.
Rodgers showed the capability to still be a winner, leading the Steelers to a 10-7 record, which was good enough to win the AFC North title.
It will be totally up to Rodgers on what he decides to do next. Will it be retirement, will it be signing with a new team, or will it be returning back to the Pittsburgh Steelers for at least one more season?
