The Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly planning to hire Mike McCarthy as their next coach. McCarthy is set to succeed Mike Tomlin, who coached the Steelers for 19 years before stepping down earlier this month.
Now that the Steelers are hiring McCarthy, there is a possibility that Aaron Rodgers returns to the team for one more season amid the quarterback’s looming retirement. On that note, we revisit McCarthy and Rodgers’ time together with the Green Bay Packers.
Mike McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers Won the Super Bowl With the Packers in 2011
Mike McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers worked together at Green Bay for 13 seasons, from 2006 until 2018. They played key roles in helping the Packers win the Super Bowl in 2011.
McCarthy was hired by the Packers in January 2006. At the time, Rodgers had just finished his rookie season, serving as Brett Favre’s backup.
McCarthy gave Rodgers the QB1 role at Green Bay ahead of the 2008 NFL season. They won the Super Bowl together in 2011. The Packers also won six NFC North titles with McCarthy as coach, five of which came with Rodgers as the team’s starting quarterback.
McCarthy was fired by the Packers in December 2018. He compiled a 125–77–2 regular season record and a 10–8 postseason record at Green Bay.
Rodgers also won two of his four MVP awards when McCarthy was coaching the Packers. However, it remains to be seen if the veteran QB will reunite with McCarthy at Pittsburgh.
Aaron Rodgers Reportedly Not Expected To Return To Steelers For 2026 Season
Aaron Rodgers led the Steelers to the AFC North title in his first year with the team in the 2025 season. However, Pittsburgh crashed out of the postseason with a 30-6 loss to the Houston Texans in the Wild Card round.
A few days after the Steelers’ loss to the Texans, reports claimed that Rodgers doesn’t plan to return to Pittsburgh for a second season. He is set to become a free agent in March, though there are some who have suggested that the QB might retire.
