Michael Penix Jr.’s biggest question coming out of college was whether he could stay healthy. Initially, he appeared to answer that question positively, but a turn in his second season ended his year early. Many injuries can carry over into the following season, but will that be the case for Penix in 2026?
According to a Tuesday ESPN report, the Atlanta Falcons quarterback is headed back to the field. He will be able to participate in the second phase of the offseason, seemingly putting him on track to be ready for Week 1 without any limitations.
“The Falcons posted a video Tuesday of Penix throwing to wide receiver Drake London at the team’s facility in Flowery Branch, Georgia. A team spokesperson said Penix is participating in Phase 2 of the Falcons’ offseason program,” the report read.
Phase 2 does have limitations, however, as it doesn’t allow full 11-on-11 or 7-on-7 scrimmages and drills. However, it does allow individual and group work and instruction. Meaning that Penix will see plenty of work in Phase 2. Phase 3 will allow 11-on-11 and 7-on-7 work.
Penix’s ability to participate in the phase will speak volumes to confirm his progress as the preseason looms.
Michael Penix Jr. Enters Make-or-Break Moment In Wake of New QB Addition
Michael Penix Jr. is rounding into form, but the quarterback will have another test on the other side of his ACL tear recovery. Tua Tagovailoa, who led the Miami Dolphins for the last six seasons, is also on the roster.
Another name under the radar is Trevor Siemian, who led the Denver Broncos to a winning record in 2016 in his de facto introduction to the NFL.
Put simply, Penix, who is entering a crucial third season, will have every reason to give the Falcons perfection in the offseason, preseason, regular season and a run in January. Anything falling short of that could spell doom for the quarterback.
In other words, it’s now or never for quarterback with a 4-8 career record, injury history and other quarterbacks itching for an opportunity just behind him.
