Alvin Kamara was once the newcomer to the New Orleans Saints. However, the running back has morphed into a legend beyond his impressive career-long production. Kamara saw the Saints at the team’s peak with Drew Brees and Sean Payton and saw things erode.
He also has seen the advent of a new era after working his way through the transitional post-Payton stretch. It appears he wants to be around for at least one more season to see whether Tyler Shough is the real deal, according to a conclusion reached in a Monday piece by NFL media’s Grant Gordon.
However, this time around, the experience could be much different, with Kamara set to share the roster with Travis Etienne Jr. Etienne’s addition was not a surprise, as Kamara saw his production drop to a career-low 3.6 yards per carry in 2025.
As such, expect Kamara to split significant carries with Etienne. The former Jaguars running back was brought in to help improve the backfield situation after a season in which Kamara missed time due to injury. Essentially, considering the team’s $48 million investment into Etienne (Spotrac), the contract is set up for him to be the top running back.
Kamara will still have a significant role in the offense, but all signs point to him being used as a bonus rather than the bellcow in the backfield. Etienne offers a similar skillset to Kamara, so the transition should be somewhat seamless.
Alvin Kamara Contract Details
While Alvin Kamara is expected to be useful in 2026, nothing is guaranteed beyond that. Kamara’s deal is set to expire after the 2026 season, which is set to leave him unemployed as he heads into an age 32 season. At his advanced age, the running back has entered a period of his career in which one or two-year deals are the best he can hope for.
The back has been playing on a deal worth $24.5 million over the last two years (2025 and 2026), according to Spotrac. Expect his future earnings to continue to dwindle, barring an explosive return to form in 2026.
However, Kamara’s earning potential likely won’t be much higher than it is now, so expect his earnings to continue to decline in the long run if he plays into his mid-30s.
