Matthew Stafford’s Los Angeles Rams got eliminated in the Conference Championship round against the Seattle Seahawks. The Rams lost momentum early in the game, and despite Stafford’s best efforts, they weren’t able to cause an upset.
Stafford went 22 of 35 for 374 yards and three touchdowns, marking another solid performance from him this season. However, the seven-point deficit they had early in the first quarter proved to be the deciding factor in their 27-31 loss.
Stafford is one of the front-runners for this year’s MVP award. Many experts believe that he’ll win his first MVP this time over other credible candidates like Drake Maye. As for his second Super Bowl dreams, it’s all over for now.
The quarterback will turn 38 a day before the Super Bowl. His current contract with the Rams runs through the 2026 season. So, when asked if he would return with the Rams next season, Stafford didn’t give a clear answer.
“I can’t generalize six months of my life 10 minutes after a loss,” Stafford said. “So I appreciate the guys in this locker room a whole hell of a lot. Everybody that helped me and helped our team be the success that we were this year. And that’s all I’ll answer for you.”
That’s not an answer any franchise or their fans would like to hear from their star player. Stafford clearly has a lot of football left in him, and the Rams would hope that he runs it back with them in the next season as well.
But for now, they’ll have to keep guessing what’s going on inside his brain. It’s also possible that Stafford was not in the right headspace to answer that question following a devastating loss. Whatever the case might be, it’ll be interesting to see what he decides about his future.
Sean McVay Doesn’t Have an Answer for Matthew Stafford’s Future
Stafford’s future in LA has been a talking point for a while. With the Rams being in contention for the Super Bowl, it wasn’t being discussed as much earlier. Now that their season is over, the topic has resurfaced.
After the loss, the Rams’ head coach Sean McVay was asked about it as well. The coach also didn’t have an answer and told the reporters to ask Stafford about it.
“Yeah, if he still wants to play. The hell kind of question is that?” McVay said when asked if he expects Stafford to be back next season.
“You’ll have to ask him,” McVay said when asked if Stafford wants to come back.
The Rams will have to live with uncertainty for now as the quarterback has refused to address it.
