Despite a valiant effort, Dave Canales’ Carolina Panthers couldn’t beat the Los Angeles Rams this Saturday during the Wild Card round. The game ended 34-31 in favor of the Rams, who will play the winner of the Wild Card game between the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers.
Fans online weren’t happy with how Canales carried out his play-calling duties against the Rams, and they wasted no time in expressing their thoughts.
“yea fire dave canales why were u in prevent?” asked someone.
“no exaggeration but Dave Canales is the worst play caller in the nfl, not a single good play call when you ahd 3 times outs and needed a fg . I hope they fire him,” lamented someone else.
“This game is kinda an indictment on Dave Canales. It seems like every game they let Bryce Young cook he’s plays really good,” explained someone else.
However, not everyone lambasted Dave Canales. A few fans defended him.
“There isn’t a coach who’s getting more out of their football team than Dave Canales,” said one person.
“The Carolina Panthers were major underdogs coming into this game. The fight Dave Canales is getting from his guys is special. This is how you’re supposed to play in January,” another person praised him.
But overall, fans were disappointed with how the Carolina Panthers’ coach performed this Saturday.
“I’ve always been high on Dave Canales he’s a great offensive mind… but he’s not managing this game well he’s getting bailed out by his players oddly enough,” wrote one fan.
Some were annoyed by how the Panthers decided to cover Matthew Stafford.
“Soft coverage every play on a team that can’t separate for sh*t Yep Dave Canales is a Pete Carroll disciple alright,” wrote another fan.
A few fans took a more nuanced view of the issue.
“All nonsense aside, Dave Canales is a good head coach. He had every one of those guys playing their a**es off. He’s still not a great play-caller and his defensive coordinator sh*t the bed in every must-have moment. #F*CKthePanthers #KeepPouting,” wrote someone.
Dave Canales on the Defeat to the Rams
Following the defeat, Dave Canales didn’t attempt to spin the 34-31 game as some kind of moral victory. He admitted the failure it represented, while praising his player’s efforts.
“They’re completely mixed,” Canales said. “Just disappointed. As we all know in this league, there are no moral victories. Today is not about a proud moment of losing this opportunity, but it’s about a team that came together to play really good football and to battle.
“It was on this stage right here—in a prime-time opportunity, in the playoffs, in the wild-card round. Unbelievable for the guys to step up and make the plays and play with physicality. And our style was on display today, and I’m really proud of that,” he added.
The Carolina Panthers came as underdogs to the Wild Card round, being the only team to qualify for the postseason with a losing record (8-9) by virtue of winning their division.
