Lions RB Depth Chart: What Are Dan Campbell’s Options After Isaiah Pacheco Signing?

The Detroit Lions shocked many NFL fans when they traded veteran running back David Montgomery to the Houston Texans.

The trade broke up their dynamic ‘Sonic and Knuckles’ backfield featuring he and Jahmyr Gibbs. The Lions got a got offensive lineman Juice Scruggs and two draft picks in return for trading Montgomery.

The Lions had a plan all along for Montgomery’s replacement, agreeing to terms with free agent running back Isiah Pacheco this afternoon. The terms and length of the deal have not been released yet.

Following the addition of Pacheco, let’s take a look at the current Lions’ running back depth chart.

    RB1: Jahmyr Gibbs

The Detroit Lions have one of the best running backs in the NFL in Jahmyr Gibbs. Gibbs, a first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, has been named to the Pro Bowl in each of his three seasons in the NFL. He’s been an extremely productive running back, rushing for 3,580 yards and 39 touchdowns while having 181 receptions for 1,449 yards, and 10 receiving touchdowns. He will once again lead the Lions’ backfield this fall.

    RB2: Isiah Pacheco

With David Montgomery gone, former Kansas City Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco is the new RB2 in Detroit. He was Kansas City’s seventh round draft pick in 2022, and went on to have a few productive seasons early on.

Pacheco has rushed for 2,537 yards and 14 touchdowns in four seasons. He’s also added 554 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns. Pacheco’s role in Detroit will be reduced to a backup role in which he has the potential to be one of the better backup running backs in the league.

    RB3: Jacob Saylers

Jacob Saylers is a second-year running back who was in his rookie season last year. Saylers had just two carries for 11 yards last season.

    RB4: Sione Vaki

Sione Vaki is a 2024 fourth-round draft pick that had one carry last season for a total of four yards.
