Tragedy has struck a Los Angeles homeless encampment as former NFL player Kevin Johnson, who previously played for the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles as a defensive lineman, was found dead there. He was 55 years old.
According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, he was found unconscious in that homeless encampment on Wednesday morning. He was soon pronounced dead and is found to have passed away due to “blunt head trauma and stab wounds.” Police have now launched an investigation into his death, which was ruled as a homicide.
The former NFL star bounced around the league during the 1990s, being a fourth-round draft pick (No. 86) by New England out of Texas Southern in 1993. He had stints not just with the Patriots, but also the Minnesota Vikings and the then-Oakland Raiders. However, he was best known for his time with the Philadelphia Eagles where he served as a defensive lineman on two separate occasions during his career.
Kevin Johnson, not to be confused with a Houston Texans player of the same name, recorded 43 tackles and seven sacks during his time in the NFL, with him also returning a fumble for a touchdown during his time with the Eagles. After his time in the league, he played in the Arena Football League where he won a championship with the Orlando Predators in 1998. He also played for the Los Angeles Avengers in that same league.
Johnson has since fallen into hard times and police believed that the former Texas Southern standout was living in that Los Angeles homeless encampment where he was allegedly attacked. He reportedly had been dealing with health problems that contributed to him ending up living in a homeless encampment.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Speaks On Death Of Former NFL Lineman Kevin Johnson
Kevin Johnson was a Los Angeles native, going to Westchester High School, an elite sports high school which he helped lead to the Los Angeles City championship in 1987. Following his death, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Steve De Jong spoke about what they have found so far:
“Unfortunately it appears he was homeless,” he told Newsweek. “It looks like he was probably living there.”
Investigations are still ongoing, and the case is still active, so authorities may also be keeping some details under wraps for now.
