Jerry Jones and Skip Bayless both watched the Dallas Cowboys struggle defensively in 2025. In 2026, both have plenty of reasons to stay aware of what’s happening at the FIFA World Cup. Bayless, a staunch Cowboys defender at times, is also not afraid to call his favorite team out. He used the FIFA World Cup as a vehicle to take a shot at the team.
Bayless posted the attack on X on Friday evening in a statement that took a shot at both Paraguay and the Cowboys.
“I don’t closely follow World Cup buildup, but from what I just saw, either Team USA is better than I expected – a true contender – or Paraguay’s defense is no better than last year’s Cowboys,’” he posted.
Team USA defeated Paraguay 4-1 in a blowout win that saw reaction and attention from many different walks of life in typical playoff and championship fashion. Team USA took 17 shots to Paraguay’s eight and had six shots on target to Paraguay’s two.
The USA team moved the ball around at will with 577 passes to Paraguay’s 282 passes, with greater pass accuracy at 91% to 74%. Paraguay also trailed in fouls with 17 compared to Team USA’s 13. Put simply, USA moved the ball at will like many teams did against Dallas in the NFL.
Jerry Jones Makes Significant Defensive Investment
Dallas finished 30th in yards per game, 32nd in passing yards per game, 23rd in rushing yards per game and 32nd in points allowed per game. Going into the offseason following a disastrous defensive performance and impressive offensive display, the choice was simple for Jerry Jones in the NFL draft.
Jones added five defensive rookies to just two offensive rookies, including a run of three consecutive defensive players to start the draft. Two of those selections were made in the first round.
While Skip Bayless wasn’t shy about calling out the unit for its struggles in 2025, Jones has taken steps to ensure Bayless won’t be able to make similar comments in 2027. Of course, rookies are never guaranteed hits in the NFL.
Will Jones’ investments pay off?
