Stephen A. Smith challenged President Donald Trump to a debate, following Trump’s derogatory comments on Monday night. The President was in New York City for Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs.
On the tarmac at John F. Kennedy Airport, late at night after the Spurs’ 115-111 win, Trump was asked about the possibility of the ESPN analyst running for the presidency. The President pointed out that he believed it was an impossibility.
On Tuesday morning’s edition of ESPN’s “First Take,” Smith responded to the President’s comments and challenged him to a debate:
“You wanna talk about IQ, I could say I could put my IQ against yours, I got something even better I could ask you why you been running from me for the past year since I asked you to talk to me, I could ask you to debate me since you think you’re that dude. We could go a myriad of ways”
Stephen A. Smith had blasted Trump ahead of Game 3, calling the president’s decision to attend the event selfish, as Madison Square Garden, unlike football and baseball stadiums, is situated in the middle of Manhattan. He said the home of the Knicks isn’t suited for the logistics of hosting a sitting president and an NBA final at the same time, and that Trump’s presence would only disrupt the proceedings.
What did President Donald Trump say about Stephen A. Smith?
Late on Monday night, at the tarmac of John F. Kennedy Airport, standing next to Air Force One, President Donald Trump was asked about the possibility of Stephen A. Smith running for office in the next presidential election.
The President bundled an insult and a compliment all in one when he explained why he didn’t think Smith was suited for high office:
“I think he’s a nice guy, but you need a certain aptitude to run for president,” Trump said. “You need a high IQ. I’m not sure that Stephen has that. I don’t think he does, actually.”
Several political analysts have raised the possibility of Stephen A. Smith making an outsider run in the Democratic presidential primaries, not unlike Trump’s own outsider run in the Republican primaries of 2016.
