‘You Gotta Be Dumb’: NFL Analyst Drops Bold Statement Amid Backlash on Patrick Mahomes’ $504M Worth Contract Extension

Last week, Patrick Mahomes extended his contract with the Kansas City Chiefs until 2033 in a deal valued at $504.75 million overall. Some in the NFL worry that the quarterback’s cap hit will bring ruin to the Chiefs’ finances and prevent them from winning further Super Bowls with Mahomes as their star player.

Not so quick, says NFL analyst Kay Adams. According to her, this is something Mahomes has done repeatedly, and it would be ‘dumb’ to think he can pull it off again.

“A big thing of the discourse right now is that Patrick Mahomes and his cap hits are going to stop the Chiefs from winning Super Bowls,” Adams said. “I don’t know, I’m not great at math… You gotta be dumb to think that’s true, right? I’ve seen the narrative out there that Kansas City capitalized on Mahomes being a relative bargain, his contract going to the middle of the pack when it came to annual value during his last few Super Bowl wins. That’s not smart… Take a look.

“While there’s some truth to it being harder to win, of course, when you’re paying a quarterback top dollar, Patrick has already been there and done that. He’s the only quarterback in this millennium to win a Super Bowl while making top-three money, and he’s done it twice.”

Adams also pointed out that Mahomes’ cap hit was the highest and second-highest in the league when he won the Super Bowl in 2023 and 2022.

Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach on Patrick Mahomes extension

Someone who doesn’t seem worried about the financial impact of the extension is Chiefs general manager Brett Veach. Veach seemed ecstatic about Patrick Mahomes’ extension in a statement his office released last week.

“This is a huge day for the Chiefs, Patrick, and really all of Chiefs Kingdom,” Veach said in a statement. “This is a landmark deal for a once-in-a-lifetime player. Patrick has grown into one of the most prolific quarterbacks to ever play the game, and to add to that, he’s changed the culture of our building and has led us in the most successful era in our franchise’s history. Beyond the game, he’s an incredible person who puts his team and winning above everything else.”

Only time will tell whether the Chiefs have taken the right decision or not.
