The San Francisco 49ers’ Brandon Aiyuk saga continues as the wide receiver has made it clear he wants to leave the team and play for the Washington Commanders. Aiyuk has been trying to get out of his contract, which is a four-year extension worth $120 million, and he has been very loud on social media and taking shots at his current team.
One man familiar with the organization Aiyuk wants to play for is former Washington head coach Jay Gruden. He did not side with Aiyuk, saying that the Niners are not the ones in the wrong here and that Aiyuk’s $120 million-worth contract is fair.
106.7 The Fan host Grant Paulsen asked Gruden if it’s possible that “Brandon Aiyuk is actually the victim and the 49ers could be the bad guy?” The former coach said:
“No, I don’t. All you ask him to do is rehab at your facility or keep in close contact with your trainer while you’re hurt and that didn’t happen. I don’t know what the hell pissed him off so bad. They gave him a hell of a contract. It’s not an unfair contract. I don’t know where the disdain came from, but I don’t think the 49ers are in the wrong at all. I think they’re doing everything every other NFL team would do in this situation.”
Aiyuk had been on injured reserve for months, but that injury got messy when the wide receiver skipped his mandated rehabilitation with the team. This soon led the team to void the guaranteed money from his 2026 salary, leading to him skipping his rehab, with him revealing that he did rehabilitation on his injury, just not with the team.
“They’re saying all this because I missed rehab. No, I didn’t miss rehab. I just didn’t rehab with you all. Man, get me off this b-m a-s team, man,” Aiyuk said in an Instagram story.
Brandon Aiyuk Alleges 49ers Have Not Yet Paid Him For 17 Months
In yet another rant on social media, Aiyuk claimed that since his guarantees were voided in July of last year, he has not yet been paid “a single cent” by the 49ers organization.
“I haven’t received a single cent from them in 17 months,” he said. “Folks tryna hold me captive lol. Then my guarantees were voided in July of 2025. This -— is modern day ⛓️.”
Records show that Aiyuk has earned around $48.1 million since he signed the extension, and as he was placed on the injured reserve, the 49ers are not obliged to pay him at that time.
