Mac Jones did extremely well while backing up quarterback Brock Purdy when the San Francisco 49ers’ starting signal-caller was injured. There were speculations that the organization might prefer Jones starting over Purdy, but they stuck with their “Mr. Irrelevant.”
After the 49ers’ season ended following the loss against the Seattle Seahawks in the divisional round, speculations are on the rise regarding Jones’ future with the franchise.
Is Mac Jones A Free Agent? Insider Reveals Kyle Shanahan’s plans for 49ers Backup QB
No, Mac Jones is not a free agent.
He is under contract with the 49ers, having signed a two-year deal, which runs through the 2026 season. NFL Insider Dianna Russini wrote in her column that 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has no interest in swinging a trade for Jones, who went 5-3 as the 49ers starter in 2025.
“For teams looking to swing a deal for 49ers backup QB Mac Jones, I’m told San Francisco is not looking to part with the 2021 first-rounder,” Russini wrote. “Things and offers can change, but the 49ers’ preference is to keep their Brock Purdy-Jones tandem intact for 2026. Jones’ 5-3 record as a starter amid the team’s major injury struggles helped keep San Francisco afloat, and Kyle Shanahan loves what he has in the 27-year-old.”
So, even though Jones can drive interest among quarterback-needy teams, his inexpensive contract with the 49ers gives the franchise no reason to part ways with the 2021 draft pick.
Jones learned a great deal in the 2025 season under head coach Kyle Shanahan’s system. He said he earned a “PhD in football” from his time with the 49ers.
“I started half the games, and we did well,” Jones said via Niners Nation. “I signed a two-year deal in San Francisco, so my whole goal was to get back on track, and get with Kyle, just work with him, and learn, and get my PhD in football, is what I’ve been saying, because it’s true. And if I have to do that again next year, I’ll be really excited.
“I feel like it’s a good fit for me. And honestly, it’s a business. You know how this goes. And I’ve proven I can be a starter in multiple different spots. I have 50-plus starts, so I know how to do it, but it’s also a business, and I understand both sides of it.”
In eight games, he started in 2025, Jones threw for more than 2,150 passing yards, 13 touchdowns, and a nearly 70 % completion rate.
