The New England Patriots appear determined to make Christian Gonzalez the face of their defense ahead of 2026 season.
During the Patriots’ training camp practice, owner Robert Kraft said that the contract extension would make Gonzalez the NFL’s highest-paid cornerback in the league. The news quickly sparked debate across social media after NFL insider Ian Rapoport shared the news.
One fan wrote, “Making a guy who has barely played a full, elite season the highest-paid corner in NFL history is an absolute joke. This franchise has completely lost its mind.”
Another questioned why the deal remains unsigned if the offer is truly on the table.
“Ok if that’s the case then why isn’t it signed like really there’s no reason for him to wait if he was offered it he’s stupid to not take it ASAP.”
“lol I’m sure that’s false and littered with incentives,” another user commented.
“It’s weird he is saying this to the press,” one user wrote.
Another added, “Only reason this would come out publicly is for public pressure. There’s definitely something else happening behind the scenes.”
Despite the skepticism, plenty of Patriots supporters believe Gonzalez deserved the offer.
“Gonzo needs to be a Patriot for life,” one fan posted.
Another wrote, “He’s definitely one of the best in the game.”
Christian Gonzalez Earns Praise From Teammates During Training Camp
Gonzalez participated in the Patriots’ opening training camp practice, lining up against receiver A.J. Brown.
His teammates were quick to praise both his talent and professionalism.
“I think that shows his main focus, and that’s football. He’s the best corner in the league in my opinion. He’s not the big rah-rah guy. He does it his own way, but he does it at the highest level. So I’m glad to be his teammate,” Drake Maye said.
“Gonzo is someone I look up to, you know, even at the same age. I look up to how he does things, how he handles himself, and just his swagger he has in his own way. I think it’s, you know, great to see him out here playing around. And I think you saw it in the locker room before. Everybody was wondering, ‘What’s Gonzo gonna do?’ And he’s coming out here and first play he’s guarding A.J. in man coverage,” he added.
Veteran cornerback Carlton Davis echoed the same sentiment.
“He’s definitely one of the best corners in the league and definitely deserves to be paid as such,” Davis said. “He’s deserving of all of it.”
With Gonzalez entering the first offseason where he is eligible for a long-term extension, both sides appear motivated to reach an agreement.
