It’s a new day for Cam Skattebo’s New York Giants. After a disastrous 2025 season in more ways than one, Super Bowl-winning head coach John Harbaugh has arrived. The man who brought him to New York, general manager Joe Schoen, had an update on the Giants running back.
According to a Tuesday report by Underdog NFL, Skattebo’s injury recovery is progressing. Schoen expects Skattebo to be healed enough from his ankle injury to be available for the start of the “offseason program.”
“Schoen: Cam Skattebo (ankle) expected to be available for start of offseason program,” Underdog NFL reported.
Skattebo played eight games in 2025, tallying 101 carries for 410 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. In the receiving game, he earned 32 targets, 24 catches, 207 yards and two touchdowns.
If not for the injury, many expected Skattebo to hit much higher numbers, sliding in as a true successor to Saquon Barkley. Now, it seems, Skattebo will get a full offseason to prepare for the 2026 season.
Cam Skattebo’s General Manager Receives De Facto Demotion
With Cam Skattebo set to be back in short order, the question becomes who he will be surrounded by and who will make the decision. With John Harbaugh in the building, that choice doesn’t appear as clear-cut as it was in 2025.
According to a video clip posted by Giants Videos on X on Tuesday, general manager Joe Schoen spoke about how he and John Harbaugh would work together with Harbaugh seemingly having more power than his predecessor.
“I’m not worried about it,” Schoen said. “That’s just something on a piece of paper. Doesn’t matter. We need to work together and we’re going to come to the final conclusion. It’s always going to be about what’s best for the New York Giants. I have no problem with that and I’m looking forward to working with him.”
Schoen’s statement suggests that something was added to a contract that limited his power. The general manager ignoring a contract is a notable early development in the new era of the New York Giants and will be something to watch going forward.
