Is Aaron Rodgers Returning To Pittsburgh In 2026? Closer Look At Steelers’ Situation After Mike Tomlin Dismissal

Aaron Rodgers is not signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the 2026 season. The 42-year-old quarterback led the Steelers to a top finish in the AFC North with a 10-7 record, but in the wild-card round, the team suffered a blowout loss against the Houston Texans.

This has intrigued fans as they want to know if the former Super Bowl champion is intending to return for one more season with the Steelers.

Is Aaron Rodgers Returning To Pittsburgh In 2026?

This offseason, the Steelers and head coach Mike Tomlin parted ways. The franchise hired Mike McCarthy as the new head coach. Thus, if Rodgers were thinking of returning, he would have to deal with a new coaching staff.

As far as McCarthy is concerned, the veteran head coach has publicly expressed interest in keeping Rodgers around and even spoke to him about a potential return.

“Definitely. I don’t see why you wouldn’t,” McCarthy said. “I just think just like anything, knowing Aaron long enough, going through seasons. .. I think when players … when guys are up at that stage of their career, they need to step away and decompress. I think that’s very important. The game is so emotional. What these men commit to, what they put into it. I think that time away is important.

“I have spoken to Aaron, so that’s really where we are there. But I was able to sit back and watch the games and watch most of the Pittsburgh games on TV, and I thought he was a great asset for the team.”

Right now, neither Rodgers nor the Steelers has given any confirmation if they will be extending their association in the 2026 season. Rodgers signed with the Steelers on a one-year deal before last season.

In the meantime, some analysts on the outside are discussing what’s better for the Steelers going forward. Shannon Sharpe’s Nightcap co-host Chad Ochocinco believes that Pittsburgh’s best shot at competing in 2026 is with Rodgers playing as their quarterback.

“You need a quarterback,” Ochocinco said. “And sometimes age really doesn’t matter depending on who it is. Matt Stafford at 37. Then you have Drake Maye. How the hell did the goddamn Patriots go from 4–13 to 14–3 the following year? It’s because of the quarterback play. Obviously, coaching plays a goddamn factor, but you still need a quarterback.

“I mean, it just is what it is. Sam Darnold, look what he did in Minnesota.
He goes to goddamn Seattle. Obviously, there are some other pieces that matter. Obviously, organizationally, they won a Super Bowl. Who gives the Seahawks their best chance to compete? I’m not saying win, but just compete. It would be 42-, 43-year-old Aaron Rodgers. And it’s just the way the NFL is. It’s just the way it’s built. It’s the way it’s structured. You need a quarterback.”

While Rodgers previously said that his lone season with the Steelers would probably be his last. But with the addition of McCarthy as head coach, who spent a lot of time with Rodgers in the Green Bay Packers, where the signal-caller emerged as a four-time MVP, things are certainly not over yet.
