Rams head coach Sean McVay opened up about Buccaneers defensive tackle Vita Vea’s potential trade request with the Rams on the “Up & Adams” show on July 28.
When host Kay Adams mentioned Vea’s trade request, McVay appeared surprised.
“Requested a trade, huh?” McVay responded before sharing his thoughts on the Buccaneers star.
“He’s a stud,” he said. “I think he’s a great player we’ve had a problem to game plan against. But we feel good about our group.”
These comments don’t brush off the speculations entirely, but they do suggest that the Rams are happy with their current defensive line.
Vea has spent all of his eight seasons of his NFL career in Tampa Bay. He recorded 35 sacks and 256 tackles in total and helped the Buccaneers win Super Bowl LV. Entering the final year of his four-year, $71 million contract, he will be making $17 million in base salary in 2026, making any potential trade a significant financial commitment.
Reports have indicated that Vea would be moving back to California, placing teams such as the Rams, Chargers, 49ers and Raiders among the franchises being discussed as possible destinations.
Sean McVay Still Waiting on Aaron Donald’s Decision
Although Vea’s future remains uncertain, the Rams are also monitoring another player.
Three-time Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald is reportedly considering returning after retiring in 2024, and McVay admitted that the team remains hopeful while respecting the future Hall of Famer’s timeline.
“For those of you guys that do know Aaron, he’s very diligent,” McVay said to ESPN on July 26. “Anything that he does, he does all-in.”
McVay explained that Donald has been putting himself through an intense training program.
“If he feels good, then you guys know he’s going to be ready to rock,” McVay added. “”We’ll see how his body’s responding to some of the training and the way that he puts himself through the paces to know what it looks and feels like to be ready to take on what the rigors of an NFL season entail.”
“But this is his decision. He’s earned the right to be able to do it on his terms. And that’s why I think you guys are seeing us take this approach.
“But I did not ever really think this would be something, but I’m not going to sit here and act like I’m not excited about the possibility of it.”
While the Rams continue to wait on Donald’s decision, McVay acknowledged that the possibility of welcoming back one of the greatest defensive players in franchise history is exciting.
Whether Los Angeles ultimately pursues Vea remains to be seen. But for now, McVay’s public stance is clear: he respects Vea’s talent but believes the Rams already have a defensive line capable of competing at a high level.
