George Kittle Injury Update: What Happened to 49ers TE?

George Kittle suffered an Achilles heel injury to his right leg, with six minutes left in the second quarter of their Wild Card game against the Philadelphia Eagles. He had to be carted off the field, as teammates and opponents surrounded him.

He suffered the injury while catching a six-yard pass from Brock Purdy. As the tight end attempted to move up the field, his right leg seemingly gave way before Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Zack Baun tackled him. He stayed down and remained on the turf for around two minutes until he was tended to by the San Francisco medical staff.

The replay clearly showed how his Achilles heel gave way as he tried to move away from Baun. During the two-minute warning, he was officially ruled out for the rest of the game against the Eagles. Kittle recorded only that reception for six yards.

San Francisco 49ers Beat the Philadelphia Eagles And Advance To The Divisional Round

The 49ers ended up winning the Wild Card game against the Eagles 23-19, scoring the final touchdown — a four-yard pass from Brock Purdy to running back Christian McCaffrey — of the game five minutes before the end. The game was a back-and-forth between both teams, in which they traded the lead five times.

Purdy recorded 262 passing yards for San Francisco, wth two touchdowns, two interceptions, and going 18 for 31 (a completion percentage of 58%). Surprisingly, for a 49ers team heavily reliant on running back McCaffrey, they recorded only 75 rushing yards. Of those, 48 yards were from McCaffrey on 15 carries.

McCaffrey also recorded 66 receiving yards in six catches and had two touchdown receptions. However, it was DeMarcus Robinson who was their top receiver on the night. Robinson recorded 111 receiving yards, with one touchdown in six catches.

On the other side, quarterback Jalen Hurts had 168 passing yards, with one touchdown and no interceptions. He went 20 for 35 (a completion percentage of 57.1%). Their running game was much more powerful, with 140 yards. Saquon Barkley posted 106 rushing yards in 26 carries, with no touchdowns. Their top receiver was DeVonta Smith, who had 70 yards in eight receptions, but no touchdown catches. The only touchdown catch was made by Dallas Goedert, who had 33 receiving yards in four catches.
