Despite being one of the most hyped up players before the 2025 college football season, Garrett Nussmeier was unable to have an impactful season.
The former LSU QB could only participate in nine games because of severe oblique and abdominal pain, leaving the Tigers to finish the year with a disappointing 7-6 overall record.
After completing 64.2% of his passes and throwing for 4,052 yards while scoring 29 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 2024-25, Nussmeier could only throw for 1,927 passing yards, scored 12 touchdowns against five interceptions, while completing 64.2% of his passes in 2025-26.
Offering insight into Nussmeier’s injury, NFL insider Tom Pelissero wrote:
“Former LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier underwent tests at the NFL Combine that revealed a cyst on his spine — the root cause of the persistent oblique pain that derailed his 2025 season, sources say.
“The cyst was pressing on a nerve, causing discomfort in Nussmeier’s oblique. He has been asymptomatic since just prior to the Senior Bowl and all throughout the draft process; if that changes down the road, Nussmeier could undergo a minimally invasive procedure and miss just 2-3 weeks while stitches heal.”
Pelissero added:
“Either way, doctors say, there is no short- or long-term risk for Nussmeier, who is projected a mid-round pick in this week’s NFL Draft.“
Brian Kelly Heaps Praise on Former LSU Star Garrett Nussmeier Ahead of 2026 NFL Draft
Brian Kelly recently spoke about his admiration for Garrett Nussmeier during an appearance on CBS Sports.
The former LSU head coach shared that he loves his former QB and appreciated the loyalty he got from him for not transferring and developing behind Jayden Daniels while he could have easily transferred to another school.
“But he wanted to be a Tiger. He wanted to play for LSU,” Kelly proudly said.
Kelly highlighted that while the injuries set Nussmeier back in the 2025 college football season, he is never going to back off because of it as it’s what comes with the quarterback position.
Kelly pointed out the difference between Shedeur Sanders and Nussmeier and said the latter is never going to run away from contact like the former does.
