Former Philadelphia Eagles starting quarterback and Super Bowl LII champion Nick Foles took a subtle shot at the New England Patriots when talking about the current AFC championship. On Sunday, Jan. 25, coach Mike Vrabel and his 2025-26 Patriots squad are set to face off against coach Sean Payton’s Denver Broncos to determine who will take home the AFC championship this year and the right to play in Super Bowl LX.
The game is set to be played in the Broncos‘ home pitch, the Empower Field at Mile High in Denver, Colorado, but even with this supposed home crowd advantage, the team will be playing without their supposed starting quarterback, Bo Nix, who is listed as out for the game. With this, former Eagles quarterback Nick Foles took it to his X/Twitter account to assure the Broncos’ faithful not to worry, as this may be an advantage to them.
Perhaps the reasoning as to why Foles pointed out that the Patriots have a tendency to not play up to their standard against backup quarterbacks was apparent during his time. During his playing years with the Eagles, the Patriots headlined seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady is their star player. Even with this, though, the franchise would find struggles against the likes of Foles and his Philadelphia team at the time.
For the present-day Broncos, they will try their hardest against the Patriots as they will now field Jarrett Stidham as their starting quarterback. Bo Nix suffered a fractured right ankle during the team’s AFC Divisional Playoffs victory against coach Sean McDermott’s Buffalo Bills on Saturday, Jan. 17. The young standout got the injury in the second half of the intense affair that eventually went into overtime, with Denver coming out on top, 33-30.
Nick Foles’ Philadelphia Eagles Defeated Tom Brady’s New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII
Nick Foles’ lone Super Bowl championship, Super Bowl LII, came against Tom Brady’s New England Patriots back in the 2017-18 NFL season. In that game, Foles famously led the Eagles to an eight-point victory, 41-33, in the U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota, as they won it all that year. But Foles was also known to be a fantastic backup quarterback after the team lost starting quarterback Carson Wentz to a torn ACL earlier in that campaign.
