“That’s The Best We Can Do?”: Fans Question Josh Heupel As Tennessee Lands Sophomore Transfer Portal QB

The Tennessee Volunteers have found a new quarterback through the portal, says On3. It just isn’t who they expected. Colorado’s Ryan Staub has joined the Vols after a disappointing season with the Buffaloes, in which he had a couple of starts that didn’t translate into a QB1 status.

Volunteers fans seemed a bit confused at them welcoming a transfer who was a QB3 in one of the worst Big 12 programs in 2025. Is this all they are now?

“@coachjoshheupel that’s the best we can do huh,” asked one fan

“Is that QB1 Vols? If so, ouch. Had 1 or 2 good games, then more not. Was constantly rotated by Kaidon Dalter & true frosh kid,” said another person

Was it worth it to turn down Nico Iamaleava’s demands?

“I am still unclear what Tennessee’s whole Nico decision accomplished from their perspective in terms of getting them closer to a championship,” explained a confused fan

Others thought that, at least for Staub, this was the right decision.

“He’s smart getting away from Coach Prime,” claimed one fan

Others joked about that time Deion Sanders compared Ryn Staub to Martin Luther King.

“MARTIN LUTHER STAUB IT’S YOUR TIME,” joked person

“MARTIN LUTHER STAUB!,” wrote another individual

Tennessee fans couldn’t help but be disappointed.

“wanted sam leavitt but didn’t have sam leavitt money 🤣 ryan staub it is then champ,” said one fan

Other fans thought everyone was misunderstanding what Staub was meant to be for the Volunteers.

“Nice! Hope he gets a shot to play. Must’ve gotten a nice 💰to be a SEC backup rather then go to a G6 school and try to start,” said someone

Who is Ryan Staub? Profile and Numbers From Colorado’s Quarterback

Staub has been with the Colorado Buffaloes for a while now, having committed to the school a few weeks after Deion Sanders’ hiring in December 2022. At the time, he was considered a three-star recruit, who was the 47th best signal-caller in the class of 2023. As a transfer, he wasn’t even rated or ranked by 247Sports.

Through three seasons at Colorado, Staub started in three games. He recorded 681 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions. His completion percentage was a very poor 53.5%. It seems incredibly unlikely that he’s Josh Heupel’s bet for starting quarterback in the 2026 season for Tennessee. Time will tell if they manage to get a quarterback with more of a traditional experience.
