Celebrations turned bloody in Foxborough after the New England Patriots won the wild-card game 16-3 against the Los Angeles Chargers. Immediately after the team’s wild-card playoff win, Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel was injured.
The moment came after Patriots defensive lineman Milton Williams sacked Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert on 4th and 9, getting the ball back for good. Williams went on to hug his head coach and, during the process, playfully head-butted him.
The head butt was strong as Vrabel ended up with a bloody lip. Vrabel was seen later wiping the blood from his face.
Nonetheless, the moment was special as the Patriots registered their first playoff victory since 2018.

After the game, Mike Vrabel talked with Sunday Night Football broadcasters about the emotional moment unintentionally resulting in a headbutt. He joked that he told the defensive lineman to be ready to spill blood for the team.
“We talked to him about being willing to spill some blood out there and that the big dogs come out in January,” Vrabel said. “I think Milton took that to heart in the way that he played the game and he finished the game. He came over and got me pretty good, but that’s what happened.”
Williams also talked about the incident, saying his emotions took over after the win.
“I was just turnt. That was just pure emotion. I think I headbutted everybody. But I forgot Vrabes ain’t have no helmet on. He’ll be alright though,” Williams said.
Milton Williams & Co. showed stellar defense against Justin Hubert’s Chargers offense. The Chargers quarterback could only complete 19 of 31 passes for 159 yards. Hubert was sacked six times and was allowed only 57 rushing yards on 10 carries. The Chargers’ total yardage of the game was just 207 yards, while the Patriots had 381 yards, including 235 passing yards from quarterback Drake Maye, who had one touchdown against one interception.
The Patriots have advanced to the divisional round of the playoffs. Their next opponent is yet to be determined between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Houston Texans.
