Indiana Hoosiers quarterback Fernando Mendoza has made a kind gesture ahead of the NFL Draft this year, as it relates to the current condition of his mother, Elsa.
On Thursday, Mendoza is projected to be one of the few players who can possibly be selected with the first overall pick in the first round of the draft, given how he fared in his college football tenure last season.
In a post by @FOS on X/Twitter, it was detailed that Mendoza is launching a fund in his family’s name that is meant to help individuals who are dealing with multiple sclerosis nationwide. This is the same sickness that Fernando Mendoza’s mother, Elsa, is dealing with, and as such, the young talent has personally committed to donating $500,000 to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
As the Miami, Florida, native is making great use of his money for a national cause, he is focused on hopefully hearing his name called in the 2026 NFL Draft. Mendoza is fresh off the 2025 season in which he led coach Curt Cignetti’s Indiana-based program to its first-ever national championship with a six-point victory, 27-21, over coach Mario Cristobal’s Miami Hurricanes in the college football playoff final.
Fernando Mendoza Once Said His Resiliency Comes From His Mother, Elsa
In an interview with American sports commentator Rich Eisen ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft on April 20, on Eisen’s show on YouTube, Fernando Mendoza made a guest appearance. Eisen asked Mendoza where his resiliency comes from since he went through a lot of tough battles in the recently concluded season.
Mendoza believes that it comes from his mother and her daily battles with multiple sclerosis.
“This resilience comes from my mom. My mom struggles with multiple sclerosis, and I see her fighting every single day and with a smile on her face. So there’s no excuse for me to have a bad day, bad play, or bad game. So I’m always trying to have an optimistic approach, give the best, serve the best I can to my teammates. As you can see there, you know, I’m just always, whatever the team needs me to do to win,” Mendoza shared. (0:52)
“Whether it’s running up the middle, whether it’s throwing the ball on the outside or whatever I’m asked to do, I’m gonna try to do to my best ability for the team,” he continued.
