With free agency right around the corner, the Atlanta Falcons plan on using the franchise tag on emerging tight end Kyle Pitts.
Teams are officially able to place the franchise tag on pending free agents until Mar. 3, and per NFL insider Ian Rapoport and other sources, the Falcons will use the tag on Pitts. The hope is that the two sides can agree to terms on a long-term deal.
This comes after Pitts had a breakout season in year five in the NFL after he set career-highs in receptions (88) and receiving touchdowns (5) while also recording 928 receiving yards.
Kyle Pitts Contract: How Much Does Atlanta TE Earn?
With Kyle Pitts being franchise tagged, he is set to make $16.3 million on a one-year contract for the 2026-2027 season. Franchise tags are calculated using the average of the top five salaries for each position in the NFL.
Kyle Pitts is Seconds Known Player Planned to be Franchise-Tagged This Offseason
Kyle Pitts isn’t the only-known player who is expected to be franchise tagged this offseason. The Dallas Cowboys will use the franchise tag on wide receiver George Pickens, according to NFL journalist Judy Battista.
Pickens, like Pitts, had a breakout season, and the most productive season of his career. Pickens set career-highs in receptions (93), receiving yards (1,429), and receiving touchdowns (9.)
The Cowboys took the gamble of not extending Pickens when acquiring him, and now will have to make him a top-five highest-paid wide receiver if they can reach a long-term deal with him. Otherwise, he’ll play on the tag.
