With Super Bowl LX now finally over and the dust having settled, the Seattle Seahawks have been crowned Super Bowl champions. The game is also notable because of Drake Maye, as the New England Patriots quarterback broke the record for becoming the most sacked QB in the NFL postseason during the Super Bowl era. Just how many sacks did he take that one game though?
The quarterback who previously had that dubious honor was Joe Burrow, who got sacked 19 times during the 2021 postseason. Drake Maye was nowhere near that coming into Super Bowl LX, as he only had 14 sacks in the postseason this year. However, the Seattle Seahawks defense had other ideas, sacking him six times during the game, resulting in him breaking the postseason record for most-sacked QB during the Super Bowl era.
The Patriots fared better in the fourth quarter, but in the first three, it was all Seahawks as the Seattle defense did not allow New England to score in the first three quarters. The final sack that Drake Maye had to endure came from Derick Hall, who made the record-breaking sack in the third quarter, thus making Drake Maye the most sacked QB in the NFL post-season.
As for Drake Maye having a bad time at the Super Bowl, the reason for his record was that he faced four of the league’s top nine defenses during their post-season run, including the LA Chargers, the Houston Texans and the Denver Broncos. They ultimately ran into a solid brick wall of defense once they got into the Super Bowl against the Seahawks as they only scored 13 points in that 29-13 loss.
Seattle Defensive Star Revealed Gameplan vs. Drake Maye and the New England Patriots
Coming into Super Bowl LX, the Seattle Seahawks had a gameplan and they actually stuck to it. That gameplan was to stop Drake Maye and force him to commit mistakes, and that was what Seahawks edge rusher Uchenna Nwosu admitted to on Sunday:
“The plan was to get to Maye, disrupt him. We knew he was their whole team,” he said. “We knew if we affected him, their whole game plan would be nothing. … Drake’s a great guy, has a lot of talent and a bright future ahead of him.”
The Seattle defense sacked Drake Maye five times in the first quarter and forced him to make throwaway plays all night. While he finally broke through in the fourth quarter, the Patriots never fully recovered from that scoreless start.
