Not many people know who Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio is, but they know who Bad Bunny is. From music fans who have followed his meteoric rise in Puerto Rico to him showing that he can wrestle in WWE, to him being named as the performer for Super Bowl LX, fans know Benito more as Bad Bunny. But how did it come to him being called that?
Considered one of the bestselling music artists in the world with a global fanbase, Bad Bunny revealed during a 2018 interview with Entertainment Tonight that he decided on his stage name because of a childhood picture of himself.
“When I was a little boy in school, I had to dress up as a bunny, and there’s a picture of me with an annoyed face. And when I saw it, I thought I should name myself ‘Bad Bunny,’” he said. “It’s’ a name I knew would market well. A bunny is something so common that I thought to myself, every time someone sees one, they’ll remember my music.”
The name stuck, as more and more people called him Bad Bunny over his real name. While some fans still call him Benito, his real name, a majority would only know him as Bad Bunny.
Bad Bunny Brought Out Fellow Puerto Rican Superstar Ricky Martin, As Well as Lady Gaga and Cardi B. For Super Bowl LX Performance
With his Super Bowl Halftime Show performance now over, it is safe to say that he brought the house down at Santa Clara. The reggaeton artist did not do it alone, though, as he brought out another Puerto Rican superstar, Ricky Martin. As he promised, it was a showcase of Puerto Rican culture; he performed some of his biggest hits.
One of the biggest surprises was when he brought out fellow Grammy winner Lady Gaga, with whom he performed a reggaeton-style version of “Die With a Smile.” He also brought out Grammy-winning rapper Cardi B., with whom he has previously collaborated. Cardi B. is dating New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs, so she is not just there for Benito.
