After having a stellar regular season where he had a solid case to be named the MVP, Drake Maye floundered as he arrived in the playoffs, particularly against the Seattle Seahawks during Super Bowl LX. He broke the NFL record for the quarterback who got sacked the most in postseason history and he could not get the team’s rushing game going. While the New England Patriots made it to the Super Bowl, his own performance struggled.
ESPN analyst Nick Wright chimed in on the Pats QB’s postseason struggles, ultimately saying that Drake Maye had an all-time bad playoff run given how much he struggled.
“It’s an all-time bad playoff run for an MVP candidate. We might all owe Sam Monson and those two Josh Allen voters a big thank you,” he said. If he had won MVP over Stafford, when we saw how Stafford looked against this Seattle defense, it would have felt some type of way.”
Wright added that the QB still has plenty of potential and might be great in the future, admitting that he is already a great quarterback but he just had a very bad playoff run, noting the drop in his stats between the regular season and the playoffs.
During this playoff run, he struggled to get the ball rolling, getting hit with turnovers, sacks and being forced to make missed throws. While the Patriots did make it to the Super Bowl, many believed he was mostly carried by his teammates.
During the regular season, the man nicknamed Drake “Drake Maye” Maye had a completion rate of 72% and threw for an average of 8.9 yards per completion. He lagged behind in the playoffs, going down to a 58.3% completion rate and averaging just 6.8 yards per completion.
Drake Maye Only Performed Well During 4th Quarter After Going Scoreless in the First Three
As for how Maye actually performed during the Super Bowl, he had 27 completions out of 43 attempts for 295 passing yards with a completion rate of 62.8%, leading to two touchdown passes. However, while these stats look good, these do not tell the whole story.
The Seahawks shut him and the Patriots out for three entire quarters, with Maye getting sacked five times in the first half alone. Many of his missed throws were caused by the immense pressure from the Seahawks, which forced him to do throwaway plays. While he managed to score with a touchdown pass in the fourth, it was already garbage time and he even got intercepted late in the game, sealing their fate.
