Dexter Lawrence Contract: $28M Bengals Extension Finalizes Trade as Win-Now Move Turns Heads

The Cincinnati Bengals acquired defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence from the New York Giants in exchange for the No. 10 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. The Giants now hold No. 5 and No. 10 picks in the upcoming draft as they look to shape their roster.

After the trade, the Bengals signed Lawrence to a one-year, $28 million extension. The extension, combined with his existing contract, will keep the defensive star in Cincinnati through the 2028 season. He will earn $20 million and $22 million in 2026 and 2027, respectively.

If anything, the trade proves that the Bengals are looking to challenge for a place in the Super Bowl next season.

“Dexter fits the vision we have on our defense and will also elevate others around him,” Bengals director of player personnel Duke Tobin said via ESPN. “We are confident in Dexter and can’t wait to see the positive effects he and the other players we have acquired this offseason have on our football team. We are excited to turn to the draft and our remaining picks to further enhance our team.”

So far in 109 career games, Lawrence has amassed 30.5 sacks and 40 tackles for loss. However, last season, he registered career lows in sacks (0.5) and tackles (33).

Fans Share Verdict on Dexter Lawrence Trade

The trade was requested by Dexter Lawrence in the first place as he failed to ink a new contract with the Giants. The negotiations between the two stalled and Lawrence even skipped offseason activities. As a result, the Bengals received a 3-time Pro Bowl defensive anchor boost in their defensive line.

Several fans chimed in on the latest trade of Lawrence.

“Very reasonable price, feels like the Giants would’ve given him this, but ultimately Dex just didn’t want to play for the Giants anymore,” one fan wrote.

“Lmao bro so he wanted to reset the DT market instead he gets a 1 year extension worth under 30 mil. Bengals and Dex clowns for this so they deserve each other. W giants,” another added.

“They gave away the 10th pick for a 1 year deal? F**king idiots!” another fan commented.

“That is a massive win for both sides. Bengals get their anchor and Dexter gets the money and security he was clearly looking for,” one fan wrote.

“got his fresh start in Cincy and still cashed in. Giants move on with the extra ammo at 10.
Win-win? Time will tell,” one fan commented.

“The Bengals just nuked their cap space for a guy who’s going to be gassed by Week 10. They really traded their future for a run-stuffer while Burrow’s window is closing. Poverty franchise move,” one fan remarked.

It appears that the verdict coming out is mixed. While some fans from both sides tried to see why one had the edge over the other in this trade, many also see this as a win-win situation.
