With the NFL tag deadline expiring this afternoon at 4:00 p.m. ET, a long-term deal between Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones and the team has not yet been reached. This may force the team to use a tag on Jones.
According to NFL reporter Evan Sidery and multiple reports, there still isn’t any momentum on the two sides reaching terms on a long-term deal. If the two sides can’t agree to a long-term deal by the deadline, the Colts are expected to use the franchise tag on Jones.
Jones had a career season with Indy in 2025, but a torn Achilles injury at the end of the season kept him sidelined for the remainder of the season, with the Colts missing the playoffs.
What Is A Transition Tag?
When it comes to tagging a player, there’s a huge difference between the franchise and transition tags.
A transition tag means a player receives a one-year deal for the greater of cap percentage average of the top 10 greatest PYS at his position or 120 percent of his PYS. A player on the transition tag can negotiate deals with other teams.
Should a player reach a new deal with a different team, the team that tags him is allowed five days to match that offer. However, if that team does not match the other team’s offer, they will not receiver draft-compensation.
The franchise tag does not allow a player to negotiate with other teams. The only way they can join another team is if the team that tags them decides to trade them during the process.
New York Jets running back Breece Hall is another candidate to be tagged before today’s deadline.
