Lavonte David and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been together since 2012. But it’s not the offseason until people start weighing about his potential retirement. While news of whether he will return for next season has been played as well, this year, things are a little different.
The longtime Bucs captain reportedly remains undecided whether to return for 15th season. According to ESPN’s Bucs reporter, Jenna Laine, the Bucs will talk to the linebacker’s representatives so that they can have an idea of whether to expect him to return for his 15th season.
David signed a one‑year contract to return for his 14th NFL season in 2025. He continued as a team captain.
In the regular season, he amassed 114 total tackles (61 solo, 53 assists) in the regular season to go along with 3.5 sacks, one interception, two forced fumbles and 2 fumble recoveries.
In 14 years with the franchise, David has recorded a total of 1,714 tackles. He is tied with Hall of Fame linebacker Derrick Brooks for the most tackles in franchise history.
Lavonte David’s Potential Linebacker Replacement Explored
While Lavonte David mulls over his potential retirement decision, NFL.com’s Gennaro Filice has already found a potential replacement for the Bucs.
The Bucs recorded a collapse last season after beginning the season 6-2, but finished with an 8-9 record, thereby missing the playoffs.
According to Filice, the Bucs could draft Georgia Bulldogs star linebacker CJ Allen.
“With Lavonte David pondering retirement, Todd Bowles has to be thinking about finding a new defensive nerve center,” Filice wrote. “Allen’s scouting report screams GREEN-DOT DEFENDER. A starter for the last two-plus seasons on Georgia’s loaded roster, the linebacker fully bloomed in 2025, earning first-team All-America honors from the Associated Press. Everyone raves about his football IQ and leadership skills, but some question his ability in coverage. The combine workout looms large.”
The Bucs are evaluating options both in free agency and the draft to bolster their linebacker corps. The NFL draft is approaching, and if the Bucs can be assured about the linebacker’s return, they can plan accordingly for replacements.
