Shedeur Sanders’ QB1 Status in Question After Todd Monken’s Latest Comments

Shedeur Sanders was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the fifth-round of the 2025 NFL Draft, and got his chance to show the team what he was about by starting in the team’s final seven games of the season.

Sanders was the third quarterback to start for Cleveland last season, and helped the team win three games while going 3-4. He completed just 56.6 percent of his passes for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.

The Browns, under new leadership in head coach Todd Monken, are uncommitted as of right now to starting Sanders next season. During Monken’s introductory press conference on Monday, he was asked if Sanders will be his QB1 to start the season to which he didn’t say yes.

Monken said he’s excited to coach all of the quarterbacks that are in the Browns’ QB room. Given Monken’s comments, there seems like there will be an open QB competition in Cleveland this offseason.

The Cleveland Browns Have to Start Deshaun Watson at QB This Season

Even if the Cleveland Browns aren’t the most confident in quarterback Deshaun Watson, he has to start the season under center for the team at quarterback. Back in 2022, the Browns gave up an arm-and-a-leg for Sanders from the Houston Texans, while signing him to a five-year $230 million fully guaranteed contract.

Cleveland sent its first-round draft picks in 2022, 2023, and 2024, as well as the Browns’ third-round pick in 2023 and fourth-round picks in 2022 and 2024.

And what has Cleveland gotten out of Watson since the trade? A couple Achilles tear and shoulder injuries from Watson that has forced him to miss a lot of time in Cleveland. In the last four seasons, Watson has played just 19 total games for Cleveland. In those games, he hasn’t been that productive or good either.

Watson’s stats with the Browns are 3,365 passing yards, 19 passing touchdowns, 12 interceptions, while completing 61.2 percent of his passes.

Watson will be a free agent after this season, and it makes sense for the Browns to get whatever they can out of him to start the season. If he starts to play horribly, then they can turn to Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel, or another quarterback.
