Brandon Aiyuk’s ongoing feud with the San Francisco 49ers took another dramatic turn on Saturday after the All-Pro wide receiver appeared to take a swipe at teammate Christian McCaffrey in a cryptic Instagram story.
“People have career years when 11 on the O! Everybody eat NO KIZZY!!! I hold a NFL RECORD for making plays w the least amount of opportunities!!! Im looking for MY opp cuz I’m gone capitalize and win a bowl! I’m not gone fumble it away!! I’m done playing backseat to folks who NOT like that!!! #TRUESTORY #FREEYUKE.” – he posted.
Many interpreted the “I’m not gone fumble it away” remark as a reference to McCaffrey’s costly fumble during Super Bowl LVIII against the Kansas City Chiefs — the turnover which eventually gave the Chiefs an upper hand and helped them win the championship 25-22 in overtime.
On July 18, Aiyuk posted another story accusing the 49ers of launching a “smear campaign” after he expressed interest in joining the Washington Commanders.
“They was like, ‘BA we’re taking 30 mil out of your contract,’” Aiyuk wrote. “I was like, ‘okay.’ NFLPA was like, ‘do you want to appeal it?’ I was like, ‘nah I’m just gone go to DC.’ They was like, ‘okay, we’re gonna start a smear campaign to try and tarnish your NIL.’”
However, it should be noted that he did not provide evidence to support those allegations.
Brandon Aiyuk Continues to Take Shots at 49ers
In another Instagram Story on the same day, Aiyuk targeted head coach Kyle Shanahan, claiming the coach wanted him back only to create opportunities for other players.
“Coach wants me to come back so I can draw all the coverage and make it easy for the guys that remind him of himself from back in his heyday,” Aiyuk wrote.
He later doubled down by declaring he had no intention of returning to the team.
“I’m not returning to the power plant,” he posted.
The back-and-forth has continued to raise questions about Aiyuk’s NFL future. ESPN insider Adam Schefter said that the receiver’s repeated social media posts could be hurting his market value, and teams may be hesitant to pursue a player who has so openly criticized his current team.
For now, Aiyuk remains steadfast in his stance. Whether he goes to another team or stays with the 49ers, only time will tell.
