Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders is the latest to chime in on Bill Belichick missing out on becoming a first-ballot Hall of Famer. Belichick needed at least 40 out of 50 votes to become a Hall of Famer, but he fell short. As a result, he won’t become a Hall of Famer this year, despite being an eight-time Super Bowl champion.
The likes of LeBron James and Patrick Mahomes have already expressed shock and disappointment over the verdict. Sanders also exploded on social media when he heard the news about Belichick. He wrote:
“The Disrespect to Coach Belichick is straight out IGNORANT! He’s arguably the BEST NFL COACH TO EVER COACH THE GAME! How quickly we forget the impact Coach Belichick made on all of us! @nfl WOW! #CoachPrime”
Belichick won six Super Bowls (2001, 2003, 2004, 2014, 2016, 2018) with the New England Patriots as their head coach. This is the most by any head coach in the history of the game. He won two Super Bowls as defensive coordinator with the New York Giants (1986, 1990). He has the most playoff wins in NFL history (31) as a head coach. Moreover, he has won 17 division titles as a head coach, the most in NFL history.
On top of that, he comes second all time after legendary head coach Don Shula with 333 total victories (regular season + playoffs). He won 302 regular-season games, third most in NFL history behind Shula and George Halas. He led the Patriots to 19 postseason berths and nine Super Bowl appearances as head coach.
Why Bill Belichick Was Denied First Ballot Hall of Fame?
Seeing Bill Belichick’s incredible credentials, it was thought to be certain that he would be a first-ballot Hall of Famer. However, the head coach’s career also involved some controversies, which might have played a part in why some voters denied him the HoF selection.
In 2007, Belichick was the head coach of the Patriots, who were fined and lost a draft pick for videotaping opponent signals. Then in 2015, Belichick’s Patriots got tangled in the controversy of deflated footballs.
Sports commentator Skip Bayless mentioned both of these incidents to suggest why Belichick didn’t deserve first ballot Hall of Fame.
