Chicago is about to lose a part of its identity as the Bears are likely to move to Indiana. This has been an ongoing conversation for a while, and all the latest developments indicate that the final announcement will come out very soon.
Chicago fans aren’t going to be happy about it. The Bears have been an integral part of the city, and the fans have supported the team over the years. But the separation seems inevitable now.
Iowa also inserted itself briefly in this tussle between Illinois and Indiana, but its efforts didn’t amount to anything, and Indiana became the heavy favorite. As of now, a site in Hammond, Indiana, is being finalized for the next Bears stadium.
“The passage of SB 27 would mark the most meaningful step forward in our stadium planning efforts to date. We are committed to finishing the remaining site-specific necessary due diligence to support our vision to build a world-class stadium near the Wolf Lake area in Hammond, Indiana,” the Bears said in a statement.
The franchise also appreciated the efforts and interest shown by Governor Braun, Speaker Huston, Senator Mishler, and members of the Indiana General Assembly in bringing the team to Indiana.
“We value our partnership and look forward to continuing to build our working relationship together,” the Bears said in the statement.
This isn’t an unprecedented move, as franchises from different sports have moved out before as well. Illinois tried its level best to keep the Bears. However, when it was time for them to make one final push, they hit the brakes at the last minute.
Could Indiana Become the Bears’ Next Home?
It’s tough to imagine a scenario where this deal falls through from here. Governor Mike Braun has made it clear that Indiana is open for business and is looking forward to facilitating the relocation of the Bears.
“Indiana is open for business, and our pro-growth environment continues to attract major opportunities like this partnership with the Chicago Bears. We’ve identified a promising site near Wolf Lake in Hammond and established a broad framework for negotiating a final deal,” he posted on X.
In addition to that, Illinois seems to have given up on the effort to keep the Bears within their state.
“As Indiana moves closer to being the next home of the #Bears, Illinois cancelled a meeting this morning in the House, where a project bill (involving the #Bears) was to be discussed,” Ian Rapoport reported.
Braun, in his statement, said that a world-class stadium will be constructed for the Bears in Indiana, and their relationship with the Bears will serve as a foundation for a public-private partnership.
