“Isn’t a Guy With Crazy Traits”: Analyst Questions Ty Simpson’s Talent As Rams Pick Alabama Star As No.13 Overall Pick

There was a lot of buzz around Ty Simpson ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft as not may analysts could pinpoint and project where exactly the Alabama star would go.

Some projected Steelers as potential landing spot, others thought he could end up with the New York Jets and some even worried about the Browns drafting him on top of Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson.

On Thursday night, it became official that Simpson was going to the Los Angeles Rams as his home in the NFL.

Talking about the Rams’ decision to pick Simpson, Colin Cowherd said he wasn’t shocked but John Middlekauff had a very different opinion. He said:

“I’m shocked. He’s a one-year starter. He got banged up at the end of the year.
Uh he’s not this isn’t a guy with crazy traits, right? He’s not a great athlete.
He’s smaller. He has not proven to be durable. I had you on in the background today and Clatt was talking about the stats of starting quarterbacks to be successful in the NFL.

“The starts that they have made in college and the overwhelming majority of them that have had success Super Bowl runs, not even just say like Pro Bowl guys have been multi-year starters to get the reps, you know, in college and a certain amount of pass attempts. Now, maybe if we had Dbor with a couple cocktails, he’d say, ‘Listen, I would have gone with Tai Simpson last year, but Jalen had just he was, you know, Tai’s more my type quarterback, but Jalen had just led Saban into the playoffs. I didn’t have a choice.’ And maybe there’s some truth to that,” he added.

Nick Saban Reacts to the Rams Picking Ty Simpson

After Simpson was drafted as the No. 13th overall pick, Saban said on the ABC’s broadcast that he thinks the former Alabama star is the exact kind of player one would want in an organisation.

Saban labeled Simpson a hard worker, someone with great ability, quick and a player with smooth release.

“He’s got a strong arm. He’s accurate, he can throw the ball in short windows. So, I really like Ty.” Saban said.

Simpson was recruited by Nick Saban in 2022 and spent one year as a started in the 2025 college football season.
