Broncos’ Jonathan Cooper Faces Legal Trouble Following Second Arrest in a Week

Denver Broncos outside linebacker Jonathan Cooper faces charges related to the same alleged domestic violence incident involving his girlfriend for which he was arrested last week.

Again on Thursday, the linebacker was arrested by Parker police at around 6 p.m. At 10:07 p.m., he was booked into the Douglas County jail, facing four new charges, including two domestic violence charges, harassment for repeated phone calls and violating the protection order he received last time.

Both he and his girlfriend faced charges of domestic violence and misdemeanor criminal mischief. According to court documents, Cooper is facing additional charges, including second-degree felony assault by strangulation and third-degree misdemeanor assault. Cooper was also asked to not contact his girlfriend last time out.

On Friday morning, Cooper appeared in Douglas County court with attorney Harvey Steinberg. Cooper’s girlfriend’s attorney, Ron Gainor, was also present.

“We are obviously concerned about the contact that happened yesterday, which was extensive,” Gainor said.

Cooper was asked to pay a $5,000 PR bond. Moreover, his next court appearance is slated for July 14 at 9 am.

These charges stem from an incident that happened on June 4. The court records state that the physical struggle between the two stemmed from cheating allegations. His girlfriend allegedly threw his phone on a wall, and in response, Cooper damaged her phone by biting it.

For the criminal mischief charge, Cooper pleaded not guilty on Monday. His hearing is now scheduled on July 6, and a jury trial is set for July 22.

Broncos HC’s Remarks on Jonathan Cooper’s Latest Arrests

The NFL and the Broncos are both monitoring the situation.

On Thursday, Broncos head coach Sean Payton said he had spoken with Cooper and would wait to see how things unfold. As for the NFL, Payton said they will keep a close eye on the situation.

“I think this: I think the league has done a good job of kind of coming in and really taking over that responsibility,” Payton said. “We had a long visit with ‘Coop’ (OLB Jonathon Cooper), and now the process plays out. The league obviously will be very much involved in that. We’ll stay abreast, but much like you all. I think that’s where it’s at. We just go from there.”

Payton also shared that he has not talked with his team about Cooper but will do so soon, probably next week during the minicamp meetings.

“My instincts told me not to right away. This time next week, we have three days of mini camp. We’ll have a number of speakers. I think there will be a time though to talk about it,” Payton said.

Cooper attended Broncos OTA practices last week, but it is uncertain whether he’ll be able to join his team next week.
