The Los Angeles Rams have just made one of their most divisive picks yet, as reports indicate that even head coach Sean McVey is not on board with the team drafting former Alabama QB1 Ty Simpson. Simpson was the second-best pick for quarterback in this year’s NFL draft, right after No. 1 Fernando Mendoza, who went to the Las Vegas Raiders. However, the Rams coach was seemingly not that impressed with him.
The Rams already have Matthew Stafford, but many feel that he is getting old and might retire soon. With that, the Rams picked Ty Simpson, and during a press conference, McVey did not look too happy and made sure everyone knew whose team this was.
“Let’s make one thing clear, this is Matthew’s team,” he said.
While he did not say anything specific about the pick, many believed he was not happy with it because of the frustrated look on his face. He also admitted that he had “no clue” that the front office was picking Simpson. He did talk about their new No. 13 Pick’s status in the depth chart though:
“He’s going to compete with [Stetson Bennett].”
Simpson had been very successful as Alabama’s quarterback while McVey is known as the “quarterback whisperer.” On paper, this should mean that the LA Rams coach could guide the young QB to greatness as they await for Matthew Stafford to retire, but this does not seem to be able to play out in reality if the rumors are to be believed.
Sean McVey Never Met With Ty Simpson Ahead of the NFL Draft
Aside from Sean McVey having “no clue” that the team is picking Ty Simpson, reports are also indicating that even though the Rams have been linked to Simpson ahead of the draft, the coach himself has not even spoken to their eventual No. 13 pick before the draft even happened.
To make things even more surprising, the first time that Ty Simpson had ever spoken to Rams GM Les Snead was on draft night itself, and it was Simpson who admitted it himself.
“This was my first time talking to Les tonight,” he said. “It was something that was super surreal. I know my dad had spoken with him briefly, but this was my first contact and it was cool. I’m looking forward to meeting him and getting to know Coach.”
Simpson has expressed his respect for McVey before though, calling the coach as “quarterback genius.” How things play out with him as one of the backups though could be interesting, as he may possibly be relegated to QB3.
