Analyst Claims WNBA Will ‘Be Over’ If Caitlin Clark Isn’t Better Protected

The debate surrounding Caitlin Clark’s treatment on court took another turn after NFL analyst LeSean McCoy gave a blunt statement on the WNBA’s future.

On Speakeasy, the former NFL player argued that the league risks what it has built if Clark is allowed to get injured without additional protection. His comments came after the Indiana Fever’s 111-109 loss to the Phoenix Mercury, during which Clark exited with a back injury.

“I’m not gonna overreact over one little incident, but if you keep this stuff, there won’t be no WNBA,” McCoy said. “If Caitlin Clark said, ‘You know what, man, I’m done with the WNBA,’ where would the WNBA be? It’ll be over.”

McCoy compares Clark’s situation to Michael Jordan and Tom Brady.

“You got a star player like that,” McCoy said. “When Michael Jordan was the man, the NBA made sure, ‘Hey, you can’t be doing that anymore.’ Quarterbacks in the NFL, they hurt Tom Brady’s knee… and after that, you can’t tackle quarterbacks by the knee.”

“Bro, if you don’t take care of the young GOAT, what the hell is gonna happen to the WNBA?” he added.

    Caitlin Clark’s Injury Raises Concerns

After the loss, Fever coach Stephanie White criticized the referees, saying officials failed to manage the game’s physicality despite recent tensions between the two teams.

“You’re coming in here aware of what happened two nights ago, and that still happens. Absolutely unacceptable. Absolutely unacceptable. And the reckless closeout that they actually reviewed, and the foot still comes down on top of the defender’s foot that wasn’t upgraded. Absolutely disrespectful. We have a generational talent and a WNBA superstar who had two cheap shots right there that weren’t called,” White said.

“The fist in the throat is crazy. It’s crazy. It’s dangerous,” she added.

WNBA viewership rose once Clark came into the league. Before this, very few people were interested in watching women’s basketball. And that is why people are furious that the league isn’t doing anything about it.

Whether league officials agree with McCoy’s assessment remains to be seen.
While the Fever will now await further updates on Clark’s health as they prepare for their next set of games, discussions around officiating and player safety continue to make headlines.
