Just days after posting a cryptic video cheering for the Washington Commanders as an active member of an NFC rival, Brandon Aiyuk made waves again with another social media post on Wednesday.
The 49ers wideout was seen calling on San Francisco to cut him, stating his intent to join the Washington Commanders and that he would do so “tomorrow.”
Shortly after the video went viral, Emmanuel Acho shared a blunt message on Aiyuk’s situation during the Wednesday edition of the ‘Speakeasy’ Podcast. The analyst said:
“Brandon Aiyuk is on an early Antonio Brown trajectory without the Antonio Brown talent. And that’s tough. Antonio Brown had six consecutive seasons like we’ve never seen in the National Football League before. And I remind you all, it wasn’t all of a sudden. It was subtle.”
Antonio Brown had a similar outburst against the Pittsburgh Steelers before eventually requesting a trade in 2018. He was publicly criticized by then-head coach Mike Tomlin for livestreaming in the locker room without permission, getting into arguments with teammates, and missing multiple days of practice before the 2018 season.
Acho likened the situation to Aiyuk’s as the 49ers wideout has completely distanced himself from the team and head coach Kyle Shanahan. The 28-year-old is under contract with San Francisco through 2028 after signing a $120m extension back in 2024.
Furthermore, Acho claimed that while Aiyuk has been acting as Brown did before his outbursts began, the 49ers star still has the power to ‘steer’ his situation back to normal.
“What ended up as a flood started out as a puddle. Antonio Brown did not start on Instagram crashing out. No, Antonio Brown just started running around saying, “Free me,” calling his grandma, if I’m not mistaken, on Instagram Live, cussing out general managers.
Now, just because he’s on the trajectory does not mean he will land there. It just means that’s currently the destination his airplane is on. Hopefully, we can reroute it and bring it back to normalcy.”
The 49ers have not made any public statements in response to Aiyuk’s comments and are reportedly looking for solutions to the situation, including possibly keeping the wide receiver on the roster until a favorable trade offer is made.
George Kittle Speaks Out On Brandon Aiyuk Saga
While the 28-year-old receiver has possibly severed his ties with the 49ers organization permanently because of his social media posts, the media attention to the situation has also negatively affected 49ers players.
During an interview with Barstool, the star tight-end made his feelings very clear on the situation, while also giving Aiyuk his props. Kittle said:
“I used to make it a habit of mine to go out early in the morning before meetings to watch him train because he’d always be out there early, and I watched him run over 22 miles an hour and watched him stop on a dime. He’s still got it, but that was eight months ago, so I don’t really know. You guys have fun with that, I guess.”
While Aiyuk had his career season in 2023, where he put up 1,342 yards and scored seven touchdowns, he went down with a torn ACL and MCL after playing just seven games in 2024. Aiyuk spent the last season recovering and rehabbing.
