After serving as the Buffalo Bills’ head coach for the last nine seasons, the Bills decided to move on from head coach Sean McDermott, following an overtime Divisional Round playoff loss to the Denver Broncos.
McDermott led the Bills to eight playoff appearances out of his nine seasons as head coach, but failed to reach the Super Bowl. He has an overall career record of 106-58 and won five-straight AFC East titles from 2020-2024.
The Bills announced on Jan. 27, that offensive coordinator Joe Brady would be promoted to head coach following the firing of McDermott.
5 Potential Landing Spots For Sean McDermott
-San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator
The San Francisco 49ers lost former defensive coordinator Robert Saleh to the Tennessee Titans this offseason, becoming their next head coach. The 49ers have one of the more talented defenses in the league, but key injuries to guys like Nick Bosa and Fred Warner put them outside of the top 10 defenses in the NFL.
McDermott could return back as a DC with one of the more talented openings in the NFL.
-Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator
The Dallas Cowboys fired defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus following a disastrous season from the defense. Dallas’ defense allowed the most points per game (30.1) and ranked 30th in yards allowed per game (377.)
Dallas is in cap hell, but has two first-round picks that could be used on some defensive talent. McDermott would have his hands full re-shaping the defense, but if he could flip the defense around, Dallas could be a solid team if they’re more balanced.
-Las Vegas Raiders head coach
The Las Vegas Raiders are one of two teams left that has to hire a new head coach. The Raiders haven’t had any stability at head coach recently, going through three different head coaches since the 2022 season.
The Raiders’ last postseason appearance came in 2021 and they haven’t won a playoff game in 20 years. Could McDermott, a proven winner, help Las Vegas turn in to a winning culture? It wouldn’t be a bad experiment.
-Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator
Another defensive coordinator currently open is the Tennessee Titans. They hired former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh as its next head coach, who is also a defensive-minded coach.
Saleh could look to add another talented defensive mind to his new staff, though there aren’t many reports that link McDermott to the Titans.
-The Couch (takes a year off)
We’ve seen many head coaches take some time off after being fired/moving on from their team. With only two head coaching vacancies McDermott might want to take some time off this upcoming season.
Maybe McDermott takes over as head coach two seasons from now for a team that fires its head coach next season. Some teams/coaches that could be on the hot seat include the New York Jets, Cincinnati Bengals, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Washington Commanders.
