After Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini were spotted at a luxurious resort in Arizona a few months ago, the popular NFL reporter quit her job at The Athletic after the organization began an internal investigation.
Months before their pictures together from Arizona went viral, Russini was seen sharing an incident on “Stugotz and Company” about getting out of a situation with a police officer, in which she used her access to a “head coach” to get out.
The New York Times, which is the parent company of The Athletic, released a lengthy story on Wednesday about Russini’s conduct amid the Mike Vrabel controversy:
“Do you want to talk to the coach? You should talk to the coach,” Ms. Russini said she told the officer as she recounted the incident a couple of weeks later on “Stugotz and Company,” a radio show and podcast.
“Ms. Russini operated in a sports-media landscape where traditional journalistic lines could be blurry. She might have considered calling a coach to get out of a ticket not only appropriate, but a funny story to tell on a podcast. For The Athletic, under the ownership of The Times, it was out of bounds. Danielle Rhoades Ha, a Times Company spokeswoman, described it as “unacceptable conduct,” adding that Athletic editors had been unaware of it because Ms. Russini neither sought nor received permission to appear on the podcast, as required by company guidelines.
“Mr. Vrabel was not the coach whom Ms. Russini called for help getting out of the ticket, according to someone with whom she shared the details of the story.”
Rob Gronkowski Sends Fitting Advice to Mike Vrabel and Co. Amid Dianna Russini Controversy
The New England Patriots have been in the news a lot this offseason; however, it hasn’t really been about their practices, roster or improvements, as the headlines have been mostly about the Russini and Vrabel controversy.
On Saturday, Rob Gronkowski shared his thoughts on how the Patriots can overcome the massive distraction they faced.
“It’s as easy as this: win,” Gronkowski told Fox News Digital. “You come together as a team. You work together. You work your b*tt off.
“Everyone has to show that they’re accountable during training camp and the preseason. Once the regular season comes, you gotta win, baby. If you win, it solves all problems. It really does.”
While Russini quit her job at The Athletic, Vrabel just missed the 2026 NFL draft’s Day 3 while he sought counselling, aiming to “be a better husband and father.”
