New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani is as engaged with the Knicks as he’s ever been. Now that his favorite NBA team is bound for the NBA Finals, he’s had no shortage of strategies for trolling the Knicks’ opponents in the championship series.
Just a few hours before Game 1 on Wednesday, Mamdani went on X to supposedly invite San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama to a meeting in a week’s time. The tweet appears to be a harmless, courteous message, but Mamdani knew exactly what he was doing as far as timing is concerned.
“I’m pleased to invite @Wemby to our second Commission on Government Efficiency hearing on Wednesday June 10th 5-8pm, where we’ll be asking the public for their thoughts on how government can run better,” Mamdani tweeted. “Would love to have you there for the whole time!”
It’s no coincidence, of course, that Game 4 of the NBA Finals on that very date. What’s more, Mamdani’s meeting is set to wrap up just 30 minutes before tipoff.
The mayor’s tweet was met with a host of hilarious responses from fans online.
“Why not have your damn meeting at Madison Square Garden. @Wemby will be there.”
“Would be so funny if Wemby goes, drops some wisdom on that committee then drops 35/10/5/5 on the Knicks”
“I’m baffled at the number of people and/or bots in the comment section that don’t get the joke.”
“so food poisoning with greasy ny slice so he doesn’t sweep your knicks. nice try buddy”
“The only insight Wemby could give is on the big and tall section at Target dude”
“delay the game a bit pull up to the end of the 4th quarter and he still wins it”
Though the meeting doesn’t appear to be a physically demanding task, even the slightest distractions can be costly for players who are gunning for the richest prize in the NBA.
For a variety of reasons, Game 4 could be an absolutely crucial game for the two-time NBA All-Star. But first, Wembanyama and the Spurs will have to get through Game 1 first.
“That Was Too Emotional for Me”: Kevin Garnett Rips Victor Wembanyama for Crying Tears of Joy After Western Conference Finals
One former NBA champion who’s expecting Victor Wembanyama to stay focused is Kevin Garnett. On his “KG Certified” podcast, Garnett blasted Wembanyama for shedding tears after the Spurs knocked off the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals.
“That was too emotional for me. Man, he got four more games to try to get. You’ve got to go through the Finals now. Nah, you still gotta be even-keeled right here.”
Garnett admitted, though, that the Knicks will be facing a Wembanyama who has taken his game to the next level this postseason.
