There’s more clarity continuing to come out regarding Mitchell Robinson’s injury status.
The New York Knicks backup center broke his right hand last week. It was unclear when or how he sustained the injury, and his status remained a mystery in the days that followed as the Knicks continued preparations for Game 1 of the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs.
On Wednesday, NBA analyst Brian Windhorst provided some clarity on the situation. According to him, the injury is more significant than a simple pinky issue that had initially been reported.
“It wasn’t his pinky. It was his fifth metacarpal. It’s a broken hand,” Windhorst said on ESPN’s Get Up. “When you break this part of your hand, it’s known as a boxer’s fracture because most of the time it means you hit something.”
Windhorst’s update sheds more light on Robinson’s injury, though questions still remain about exactly when and how the fracture occurred.
Is Mitchell Robinson playing tonight in Game 1 of the NBA Finals vs. Spurs?
Mitchell Robinson has been listed as questionable for Game 1 of the NBA Finals. The 28-year-old has been seen at practice with his injured hand wrapped.
According to reports, Robinson had been planning to play through the injury while wearing a brace. However, nothing has been made official. He is expected to go through final warm-ups before the team decides whether he will be available off the bench.
Robinson remains a key piece of New York’s rotation. He has been with the Knicks since they selected him in the 2018 NBA Draft. After appearing in 60 games this season, he has settled into his role as Karl-Anthony Towns’ backup. His role could be especially important against Victor Wembanyama, as Robinson has emerged as one of New York’s most effective offensive rebounders.
This postseason, Robinson averaged 5.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, 0.6 blocks, and 0.5 steals in 14.2 minutes per game. He has continued to provide valuable rebounding and interior defense off the bench.
